Let’s be real – if you live with PMDD, you’ve probably spent a lot of time trying to “fix” yourself. Maybe it’s been supplements. Medications. Or strict diets. Therapy, journaling, hormone testing, cycle tracking, more therapy. You try it all, hoping that something will finally quiet the chaos – the rage, the despair, the disconnect from your body and from yourself. But what if healing doesn’t always start with another tool or protocol? What if what you truly need… is to be witnessed?
The Trap of Self-Blame and Solo Coping
I’ve been there. For years, I thought I just wasn’t trying hard enough. That if I ate “cleaner,” meditated more, healed my gut, or finally figured out my hormones, I’d stop losing myself every month. I analysed, ruminated, fretted about everything that was wrong with me. I desperately wanted to find the magic therapy or therapist to give me the magic key to unlocking everything.
It’s the unspoken rule so many of us live by: struggle quietly, fix it privately, don’t burden anyone else. And yet, this very mindset keeps us trapped – spiralling through cycles of shame, burnout, and isolation. I see it in my clients all the time, too. They come to me carrying decades of emotional weight, convinced they’re “too sensitive” or “just broken.” They’ve been dismissed by doctors, misunderstood by partners, and left out of conversations that should have centred them. They gaslight themselves, as I did: “I should be coping better”, “I have no reason to feel so bad”. But here’s what I know now: PMDD isn’t just about hormones. It’s about how your whole system responds to stress, disconnection, and emotional suppression. And you’re not meant to heal that in a vacuum.
The Nervous System Needs Connection to Heal
PMDD is a cycle-level magnifying glass – it doesn’t just show you what’s off with your hormones, but with your nervous system, your boundaries, your past, trauma echoes that are yours, or not-yours.
During the luteal phase, hormone changes mean your nervous system and stress response can become hyper-reactive. You might feel like you’re living with your foot on the accelerator – anxious, wired, teary. Or like someone’s pulled the plug – numb, disassociated, unable to get out of bed. That’s not a character flaw. It’s a nervous system that’s lost its sense of safety. And here’s the good news: nervous systems are designed to co-regulate. That means one of the most powerful forms of healing isn’t found in a bottle or a lab result – it’s in relationship. Being gently seen, heard, and held by others who understand.
Enter the Circle
A women’s circle is not a lecture. It’s not group therapy. And it’s definitely not another place where someone tells you how to fix yourself.
It’s a space where you show up as you are – messy, tender, real – and you are met with presence, not judgment. There’s no hierarchy. No need to perform. Just a group of women gathering with intention, offering deep listening and mutual care. The kind of care that says: I see you. You’re not too much. You’re not alone. This is ancient medicine. And it works. Generations ago, women’s circles were woven into the fabric of daily life. Women gathered regularly to share stories, process emotions, pass on wisdom, and tend to one another through all the seasons of life. These gatherings weren’t a luxury, they were essential to community wellbeing. And they still are – you KNOW how good it feels to spend quality time just with your female friends, just talking, venting, debriefing and supporting each other.
I spent years – if not DECADES – confiding only in my journal. So crippled with shame, I couldn’t imagine letting anyone see what was really going on being my carefully constructed mask. Finally in my mid-twenties I experienced my first group therapy session, and a few years later a soul-enriching womens circle. Realising I wasn’t alone and that there’s no shame in expressing my deepest, darkest feelings was a real A-HA! moment in my healing journey. Others understood, and they showed a lot more compassion than I’d ever had for myself.
Why Circles Matter for PMDD
When you live with PMDD, you’re often gaslit by your own mind – and by the world around you.
You mask how bad it gets. You try to explain it, but people don’t get it. You carry the weight of your symptoms in silence, because opening up feels risky. But when you sit in circle with others who do get it – something shifts. You stop needing to justify yourself. You feel your shoulders drop. You realise that your sensitivity isn’t a flaw – it’s wisdom. That your pain has a story. And that healing happens when we stop running from it, and start meeting it – together. In circle, no one tries to fix you. Because you don’t need fixing – you need acceptance, connection, and a space where your whole self is welcome. That doesn’t mean healing doesn’t happen. It does – in quiet, powerful ways. It happens through nervous system regulation, through being witnessed without judgement, through feeling seen by someone who truly understands. And when the space is held by a trained facilitator, there’s the safety of knowing someone can gently guide the process – knowing when to simply let you speak, and when to offer a supportive nudge if deeper care is needed. The healing that unfolds in circle isn’t always loud or dramatic. Sometimes it’s subtle – a breath releasing, a softening in your belly, a moment of self-recognition. But these moments matter. They build self-trust. They plant seeds of transformation. And in that space, the magic happens: your own inner wisdom starts to rise.
